Talking English CIC: Safeguarding Policy
1. Policy Statement
At Talking English CIC, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning
environment for all learners, staff, volunteers, and visitors. We recognise our responsibility to
safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, and to take all
reasonable steps to protect them from harm, abuse, or exploitation.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All staff and volunteers have a duty to be vigilant and to
act if they have concerns about the safety or well-being of a learner.
2. Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to:
• All staff, volunteers, contractors, and visitors.
• All learners, including adults and minors (under 18).
• All activities delivered by Talking English CIC, both on-site and during off-site excursions.
3. Definitions
• Safeguarding: Protecting people’s health, well-being, and rights; enabling them to live free
from abuse and neglect.
• Child: Anyone under the age of 18.
• Vulnerable Adult: An adult at increased risk due to disability, mental health, age, language
barriers, or trauma.
4. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is:

They are responsible for:
• Receiving and responding to safeguarding concerns
• Liaising with external agencies
• Ensuring staff and volunteers are trained and supported
5. Safer Recruitment
We ensure all staff and volunteers:
• Provide references and complete a clear Enhanced DBS check
• Receive safeguarding training before beginning their role
• Are made aware of our safeguarding procedures
6. Code of Conduct
All staff and volunteers must:
• Treat all learners with dignity, respect, and fairness
• Maintain professional boundaries
• Never be alone with a learner in a private setting
• Report any safeguarding concerns immediately
7. Reporting a Concern
If you are worried about a learner or witness any signs of:
• Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
• Neglect, bullying, exploitation, or radicalisation
You must:
• Record what you’ve seen/heard
• Report immediately to the DSL or deputy
• Never promise confidentiality to a learner disclosing abuse.
All concerns are taken seriously and acted on promptly, following local safeguarding procedures.
8. Online Safety (if applicable)
For any online lessons or digital communication:
• Use secure platforms
• Ensure learners and teachers are in appropriate settings
• Record sessions where appropriate for safety
• Respect digital boundaries and privacy
9. Confidentiality and Data Protection
All information related to safeguarding concerns will be handled in accordance with GDPR and
only shared with relevant professionals on a need-to-know basis.
10. Review
This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if legislation or guidance changes. Staff and
volunteers will be informed of updates.
