What We Do
English Lessons
All Talking English CIC learners who regularly attend our English classes are welcome to participate in our additional learning programmes and activities. Opportunities such as Walk and Talk sessions, cultural visits, garden learning activities, workshops, and special projects are offered on a first-come, first-served basis through our community WhatsApp groups. This approach helps ensure fair access while encouraging learners to stay engaged, connected, and involved in the wider Talking English CIC community.
Garden Learning
Our Garden Learning programme takes place at the Brownlow Health Community Garden in Liverpool (L8), a peaceful and welcoming outdoor space that provides a unique environment for language learning. Unlike a traditional classroom, the garden offers a relaxed setting where learners can practise English naturally through hands-on activities such as planting, growing vegetables, gardening, cooking, and environmental projects.
The outdoor environment supports learning by reducing stress and anxiety, encouraging conversation, and creating meaningful opportunities to use English in real-life situations. Working together on practical tasks helps learners build confidence, develop friendships, and improve communication skills without the pressure often associated with formal learning. The garden also promotes wellbeing, mindfulness, and a sense of belonging, making it particularly beneficial for refugees, immigrants, and newcomers who may be adjusting to life in a new country. Through shared experiences and collaborative activities, learners develop both their language skills and their connection to the local community.
Our Voice Newspaper
Our Voice is a learner-led newspaper created by advanced learners at Talking English CIC. It gives participants the opportunity to develop their English skills through real-world writing, while sharing stories, experiences, and perspectives from their communities. Learners contribute by writing articles, conducting interviews, taking photographs, and supporting editing and production, working together to create meaningful, authentic content.
The newspaper is available both online and in print. The digital version can be accessed via a QR code while hard copies are available at Liverpool Central Library. Our Voice celebrates learner voices and ensures that the experiences of refugees, immigrants, and newcomers are represented and heard within the wider community.
Deliciously Diverse Cookbook
The Deliciously Diverse Cookbook is a collaborative project with NHS Diabetes that celebrates cultural food traditions while promoting healthy eating and wellbeing. Learners contributed by cooking and sharing their national dishes, as well as sharing personal stories, ingredients, and cultural meanings behind the recipes.
The project brought people together through food, conversation, and storytelling, helping learners build confidence in English while taking part in a creative, practical activity. The cookbook will be available soon and will be shared through Talking English CIC and our community channels once published.
